#Excerpt from THE HOUSE by Sebastiana Randone @sebasti29567440 #HistFic #Fantasy

The intellectual prowess of Artemisia overwhelmed and excited the young poet, whose engrossment with the workings of her mind was such, that any enquiry as to her domestic arrangements was overlooked.
It is true to say however, that during their parting hours he did wonder about her private life. But whenever the two met, these curiosities were often superseded by matters more engaging and fascinating. For, her beauty was matched by an incisive and far reaching mind. That would often wax lyrically on a multifarious range of topics, rendering the absorbed young man helpless to enquire over more mundane matters.
As in the case of all developed intellects, an inquisitive nature was handed to Artemisia from an early age, setting in motion a life time appetite for knowledge. Amongst her many virtues, was that of a linguist, which meant that she was able to communicate with David in his native language.
And so it seemed that life had only just started when this pair met. Therefore it was of no great surprise to learn, notwithstanding the immeasurable anguish generated, that she was in fact already married.
The Contessa de Luce resided with her substantially older husband, the Count Giacomo de Luce in the opulent confines of Palazzo del Oro. The couple met in Venice, Artemisia’s birth place, five years prior to her encounter with David. It was at one of the lavish balls, hosted by the Doge, that the sixty year old count met his wife, Artemisia, who cut a fine and graceful figure as she danced sinuously around the grand Venetian ballroom.
Instantly struck by her beauty and carriage, the count assumed her to be from a grand family, which was very much not the case, for this exemplary figure of refinement was in reality, a courtesan.
A fact well obscured by a personality that combined gentility and restraint, the later trait being quite unfounded in a typical coquettish concubine. Therefore it was not due to naiveté that had led the Count de Luce to believe otherwise. It was this innate aura of elegance Artemisia exuded, that belied any hint of the licentiousness, invariably connected to this most ancient of professions.
It was through a distant aunt, that she had been introduced to this work early in her years. Therefore as an adolescent, Artemisia met with her destiny in a house famed for its training of young women.

The House is an adult fairy tale rich in mystery and intrigue.
Here is a tale of a woman so absorbed with historical novels that her own reality ceases to offer any hope of romance and beauty.
Until one day this dreamy idealist finds herself in a mysterious forest. How she arrived there is unknown. Soon she encounters a dilapidated house, within whose ancient walls magical rooms that transport to parallel worlds lie in wait.  There she is transmigrated to 18th century England, where our heroine interacts with an odd mix of characters whose dysfunctional lives become immediately apparent.
Her first tribulation involves a nefarious lord, an archetype of the monstrous characters one encounters in fairy tales. The ramification from this confrontation sets the tone for the narrative.
A magic portal finally enables escape from the austere Georgian dwelling. She is then spirited back to the enigmatic house, and a journey to Regency London follows, where a large cast of eccentric identities present themselves.
Late one night, following a long stay in Florence, a young, heart-broken poet arrives. His introduction to the beautiful time traveller offers promise of restoration and love. But there are several more obstacles ahead before her destiny in this curious adventure is made apparent.
In the end an unexpected twist is revealed. But like all good fairy tales, this surprising conclusion is pleasing, even though the means of getting there are dark, and at times sinister.

Shanna Hatfield's #WriteTip on Having an Original Book Cover @ShannaHatfield #AmWriting

Why Book Covers are So Important
Many scoff at that old adage of not judging a book by its cover, but the harsh truth is that people judge books by their covers every minute of every day. That’s why it is so, so important for book covers to stand out from the crowd – in a good way. First, let me state that I am not an expert on book covers. Not at all. However, I have learned a few things in the last two years of self-publishing about book covers and thought I’d share them with you today.
Your book cover should provide, at a glance, some hint about your story. People should be able to look at your cover and see a tiny preview into the book. If you’re writing a flowery romance that’s all sunshine and roses, you wouldn’t slap a photo of death and destruction on the cover. Likewise, if your book is a dark, suspense thriller, you wouldn’t make the cover all happy and cheery. Your cover should set the tone for the book. Similarly, it’s helpful if your cover image reflects the content of your book. If your book is set in the mid- 1800s in a western town, you wouldn’t put a photo of a skyscraper on the cover. The image should allude to the story.
The next step is one I think many people forget to take into consideration when they are choosing a book cover. Picture your cover the size of a postage stamp. That is close to the size your book appears in on-line retailers. Can readers clearly see the image? The title? Your name?
While a cover may look great filling your computer screen at full resolution, when you get it down to that tiny little size, it may lose all the important detail. It is tempting for authors just getting started to cut costs by slapping together something for a cover. Resist that urge with every fiber of your being. If you don’t have graphic design skills or resources, hire someone who does to design your cover. You want your book cover to look professional and polished. Avoid purchasing a popular pre-made book cover. I’ve noticed, especially during the holiday season, you can easily find the same cover on a dozen different books in a quick look through online offerings. When a reader is browsing through sea of identical covers, there’s a strong chance they won’t choose any of the books. Stand out from the crowd with something unique. There are many talented graphic artists working for reasonable fees.
You absolutely want your book cover to be an original. Invest time, funds, or effort into making it the very best cover possible.
Your book deserves it and so do you.

Flying from city to city in her job as a busy corporate trainer for a successful direct sales company, Kenzie Beckett doesn’t have time for a man. And most certainly not for the handsome cowboy she keeps running into at the airport. Burned twice, she doesn’t trust anyone wearing boots and Wranglers, especially someone as charming and handsome as Tate Morgan.
Among the top saddle bronc riders in the rodeo circuit, easy-going Tate Morgan can handle the toughest horse out there, but trying to deal with the beautiful Kenzie Beckett is a completely different story.
As the holiday season approaches, this Christmas Cowboy is going to need to pull out all the stops if he wants a chance at winning her heart.

Forty 2 Days (The Billionaire Banker) by @GeorgiaLeCarre #BlogTour #Excerpt #Romance

I hear the soft, thick click of the door behind me, and turn around to face him.  He stands there, tall, dark and throbbing with sexual tension.  God!  How I want this man.  A rough sound rumbles in his throat.  I recognize it.  Blind, earth-shattering desire.  It has been a long time since I heard it.  Makes me rock on my feet.  He shoots out a hand and pulls me hard towards him.  My body slams into his.
I have the impression of stone—unmoving.  It will break, but it will never bend.  But I can bend.  I mold my hips into his.   His erection is thick and hot against my stomach.  The rawness of it awakens that great beast inside me.  Greedy, relentless thing.  It wants more, it wants it all, and it wants it right now.  Intoxicated by the smoldering fire in his eyes my hands snake up his chest and twine around his neck, but his strong hands come up and untangle mine.  He catches them in his and takes them behind my back.  His clasp is a firm handcuff.
Very deliberately he holds me away from him and lets his half-lidded eyes rove my parted mouth, my breasts—thrust out towards him and heaving, down my body, to my legs.  His eyes lift again to meet mine.  I am impossibly aroused.
‘I had half a dozen fantasies of what I wanted to do to you when I got you naked.  Tame sex is not one of them,’ he says, as he plucks out the pins in my hair and flings them away.  Released, my hair falls all around my face and shoulders.
‘My beautiful whore.  Once I was good to you and you kicked me when I was down; now you get what you deserve.’
Without warning he grips the two sides of the high collar of my lovely dress and rips it into two.  I clutch the torn ends of my ruined dress together and stare at him in shock.
He looks down at me, breathing hard.  Strangely, he is as cold as ice.  My mind is in unbelievable chaos.  I have misjudged the extent of his fury.  Underneath the façade of calm he is seething with anger at what he perceives to be my duplicity.  I want to cry at the wanton destruction of something so beautiful, but in fact I am too shocked to cry.
‘Dress only in what’s in the box and meet me in the bedroom,’ he commands curtly, and walks away from me.

Inside the Mind of the Best-Selling #Author Karolyn James @karolynwrites #Romance #AmReading

An author’s mind is a very busy place. I can’t speak for every author out there, but I know my mind never stops working. So many times I’ve been sitting, watching a television show with friends and they’ll look at me and just know my mind is working on something. As an author, an idea can spark from a random thought or something we see. Our eyes and ears never stop working, obviously transferring so much information to our minds.
I’ve blogged many times on the origin of Brothers of Rock. I was doing dishes one night. For some reason (I don’t know why) I started thinking about music and musicians and rockstars. I wondered what it would be like to write a series following a band, capturing their life off stage. The next thing I knew I was spending weeks writing outlines, character ideas, and just like that, Brothers of Rock became a reality.
I take daily walks and it’s on those walks where I look around for ideas and inspiration. My mind tries to challenge me… who lives in that house? What’s the history of that tire swing? Other times, I use my walks to plot myself out of a jam. As a funny story, I recently had to a get CT Scan done. The nurse told me to close my eyes and relax. You know what I did? I thought about Brothers of Rock and the next book!
An author’s mind is a working machine that can’t stop working. That’s why I always give advice to other authors to make sure they have some kind of notebook with them for when those ideas strike. There’s nothing worse of a feeling than losing a great idea.

Goodnight, Gustav Klein by Elliot C. Mason @ArthurRay44 #Romance #Travel #AmReading

Chapter I ... Change
*
Stark parades of wintry air pounded the reddened face of Gustav Klein. He was unadorned, not bothering to notice the skilfully rehearsed tricks of the Scottish wind; he was lost in a burning recollection, sketches of the past inside his mind hurling from one side to the other, dipping a steady toe into consciousness, ablaze and frantic. A crack expanding between ruptured stone, the dam burst and a flood of memories enthralled the wayfarer, whose hair jittered in the gale, who considered the season of intrepid sadness, lust and turmoil which had brought him to this point, to the peak of his sorrows, where the only way now to go is down.

He was standing atop a small mountain near Aviemore, in the Cairngorms. The air was not warm, but it never is. And the fatigued rambler looked down, back to his trail of hope, drenched in the blood of reality, at the slopes and crevasses of his journey.

To wind back through the broken ruins of history, the scratched dance floor: the ballet pumps of time stretch outward, arms fixed parallel with the ground, holding a tendu: he remembers a woman behind a window, sunlight glaring off the glass, turning her eyes into red dots and her cheeks as pale as the clouds. The left leg is raised, holding a firm countenance, leaning forwards into an arabesque: he remembers the sound of the fireworks, the celebrations, the cheering euphoria which brought him into the current year, and forgets why. The slender body of memory gracefully peeling away from its core, balancing a perfect adage: he remembers a round of applause, remembers the miserable beat of the train rolling through sodden tracks. And the dancing clock stretches farther, reaching down to the distant floor, allongé, allongé: he remembers grey clouds; remembers the sun endeavouring to break through, or hide away; remembers not being able to tell which.

The strings of space grow, forceful plucking and an ominous ring, the hands of the conductor ravaging the air; the left leg beating in unison, the grand thump of a balançoire: he remembers a beautiful woman in a splendid city, and enjoying it for a while, before the Christmas lights were put up. Turning, tightening, the dancer of memory, rolling in, the plié lifting with heavy breath, and turn, turn, a pirouette into the past: he remembers tears and arguments and the stains of red wine. Bending at the knee, the ballerina who whisks the memories into a flamboyant concerto for the pensive thinker, the sweat of the conductor drowning the orchestra, the deafening blow of horns for the final soubresaut: he remembers saying goodnight to the journey that tantalisingly slipped through his heart like a fresh blade, and saying hello to the reflection of Mr Klein’s face, the single man who tried to escape, through the window of a train.

Time leaps. It hauls the body through the cesspit of regret. It silences the past and darkens the future. It guides with a rough hand, leading the memory to where it all began; the descent to the top of a mountain. The misty confusion of the mind is cleared, and all that is left are the dim, yellow lights of a small budget hotel in Munich switching off, the radiators crackling as they cool, the ‘For Sale’ sign twitching in the wind, the discarded rubbish blowing through the car park as the last car leaves. And the driver winds down the window, leaning out into the mild night of Bavaria, and his lethargy conquers each speck of his existence. He stares blankly at the building, the empty rooms, the moribund memories, and then he drives on.

Time patters through the gloom of the memory in bourrée, and Gustav Klein merely thinks, hauling thoughts back to the foreshadowing bitterness of autumn.

Lorhainne Eckhart's Favourite #Quote and more ... @LEckhart #AmReading #Romance

Image of Lorhainne Eckhart
How often do you write? And when do you write?
I try to write every day, and always in the morning. Unfortunately as of late though I am getting only about five mornings to write.
Do you have an organized process or tips for writing well? Do you have a writing schedule?
You have to be organized to write. I am a single mother so I really have to organize, and be fiercely protective of my writing time. Every morning I write. I do not schedule meetings, appointments anything in the mornings if it can be helped. And I’ve had to tell people no, do not phone, drop by or anything in the morning, unless it is an emergency. And I try to write ten pages a day in that time, most days I can do it.
Have you met any people in the industry who have really helped you?
Yes I have. I have teamed up with an amazing group of authors some formerly traditionally published, and all using the Amazon platform and cross promoting each other. The one thing about our  group, we play to win. Everyone is driven, succcessful, and some amazing authors. Two mentions are Carolyn McCray and Taylor Lee, there are many others behind the scenes as well, but Carolyn and Taylor have been two key authors in my success and have shared so much valuable information to stay at the top of my game.
What do you hope people will take away from your writing? How will your words make them feel?
I always hope that first and foremost that people will enjoy my stories. And for them to feel the emotion and injustice in the story my characters are living. Everyone is going to take something different away, they will either love or hate my characters. But the one thing I want people to feel good.
What color represents your personality the most?
Gold I believe.
How do you feel about social media websites such as Facebook and Twitter? Are they a good thing?
They are essential for authors. You have to learn to make social media your friend. And this a huge area for us authors to reach new readers.
If you could do any job in the world what would you do?
I’m doing my dream job now. I believe everyone should be doing what they love. And if you’re not stop and ask yourself what it is you really want to do that would make you really happy. And then you should find a way to do it. Because a job should never feel like a job, it should make you happy
What’s your most embarrassing moment of your life?
I’ll never tell, but it involved bungee jumping. I won’t do that again.
Are you a city slicker or a country lover?
I am a country lover. Land, trees, peace and quiet throw in some animals, dogs, cats, horses  I’m in heaven.
What would you love to produce in your life?
My books into a movie.
How do you feel about self-publishing?
Yeah a question I really like. I’m all for it. In fact I now self publish. And I have been very successful at it. It puts me in the drivers seat. There are many Indie authors out there, some not as successful as others. But when you self publish, the sky’s the limit. As long as you work hard, produce quality material, hire an editor a good cover designer and promote like crazy, oh yeah and don’t forget to keep writing, you can do very well.
Do you know your neighbors?
Yes I do.  I believe in communities and knowing your neighbors.
How important are friends in your life?
To me friends are important. And I have many, they are there unconditionally when I need them.
How many friends does a person need?
I guess that depends on the person ad what you feel you need.
What does love mean to you?
Love is everything. It makes the world go around. And it is the one thing you cannot survive without.
What social issues interest you the most?
There are so many social issues. And you want me to pick one. I guess the biggest one for me is violating people’s civil rights, especially the rights of the special needs. Too many times I have seen people in positions of power taking advantage of those without resources.  And I’m not talking about wealthy people, because there are so many of them who are the most generous and giving out there.
Do you find the time to read?
I make a point of finding time to read, which is really hard with my schedule. But everynight before bed,  I sit down and read my kindle.
What is your favorite quality about yourself?
I’m a very positive person. And I never look for the bad, I always look at everything I’m doing as an adventure, and what do I need to do to successfully complete this. I’m a doer, and I don’t believe in the victim mentality because we all have a choice, I look at every bad experience a something that made me a better person.
What is your favorite quote, by whom, and why?
There is a poem written my Maya Angelou, Every woman should: and this is just an excerpt from it, but everything about this poem resonates with me:
A WOMAN SHOULD HAVE …
enough money within her control to move out
and rent a place of her own, even if she never wants to or needs to…
A WOMAN SHOULD HAVE .
something perfect to wear if the employer, or date of her dreams wants to see her in an hour…
A WOMAN SHOULD HAVE
a youth she’s content to leave behind….
A WOMAN SHOULD HAVE .
a past juicy enough that she’s looking forward to
retelling it in her old age….
A WOMAN SHOULD HAVE ….
a set of screwdrivers, a cordless drill, and a black lace bra…

Emily Nelson, a courageous young mother, ends a loveless, bitter marriage and strikes out on her own. She answers an ad as a cook and live-in caregiver to a three-year-old boy on a local ranch. Ranch owner Brad Friessen hires and moves in Emily and her daughter. But Emily soon discovers something's seriously wrong with the boy, and the reclusive, difficult man who hired her can't see the behavior and how delayed his son is. So Emily researches until she stumbles across what she suspects are the soft signs of autism. Now she must tell him, give him hope, and help him come to terms with this neurological disorder--to take the necessary steps to get his child the help he needs.
As their lives become intertwined, their attraction is unavoidable--a connection sparks between them. But just as they're getting close, Brad's estranged wife, Crystal, returns after abandoning the family two years earlier. Among the shock and confusion is one disturbing question Brad can't shake: How does Crystal know so much of his personal business, the inner working of the ranch, and Emily's relationship with his son?
Crystal must've had a plan, as she somehow gains the upper hand, driving a wedge in the emotional bond forged between Brad, Emily, and the children. The primary focus for care and therapy of three-year-old Trevor is diverted. The lengths to which Crystal will go, the lies, the greed, just to keep what's hers, are nothing short of cold and calculating. Emily's forced out of the house. Brad fights to save his boy, to protect what's his, and struggles over his greatest sacrifice--Emily, and the haunting question: Has he lost her forever?
